I discovered a darling toad under a tree root this morning. I was fertilizing my impatience when I noticed one had been uprooted. I thought it was one of those pesky chipmunks but then I saw movement and there he was! I live in No. Va. and have no idea what kind he is. But I have seen lots of them around. "Fred Mertz" is about as big around as an orange, but flatter. LOL I fed him 3 small earth worms and was surprised he didn't bold when I got near him. I don't want to bother him but just want him to hang around. Is there anything I can do to encourage him to stay? How do they get water? He is soooo cute!!!!!

Hi,Thank you for your quick reply. I am just in love with this little girl (?). I she IS a girl, she'll have to be Fredericka Mertz instead of Fred. LOL I'm learning a lot just by watching her and it's so much fun. She eats every earth worm I give her. Which leads me to a question: Is it bad if I give her a few worms each day? Will she become dependent on me for food? Today, I looked where she is residing and she was gone! Awww, I thought. I guess she's moved on. But, as I was scanning the area, there she was about 4 yards away in the grass. I watched her and she hopped back to her usual hangout. Will she pretty much live there? I watered the ground around her this a.m. and put a shallow dish of water nearby. Thanks for answering my questions!By the way, I have always loved all amphibians and reptiles. The only thing that gives me the creeps are spiders!! ewwww
