This concerns a whole series of great lectures on the original natives of this region and should be of interest to us all. It's being put on by our good friends at the Indigenous Cultures Institute and I highly recommend it. Rocha, (512) 393-3310,<><>ICIinfo@IndigenousCultures.org<><>Indigenous Cultures Institute joins the City of Austin’s Mexican AmericanCultural Center (M.A.C.C.) and Great Promise for American Indians nonprofitto present the Original Texas Indians Lecture Series, a monthly programscheduled at the M.A.C.C. on the last Sunday of each month, at 2:00 P.M.<><>When the Spanish conquistadores first arrived in what is now Texas andnortheastern Mexico, they encountered more than 200 bands of NativeAmericans. Historical, archaeological, and linguistic studies show that many Mexican Americans are actually descendants of these ancient people, collectively named “Coahuiltecans.”<><> On Sunday, April 27, Dr. Mario Garzawill share little known historical and cultural information on the identityand ancestral legacy of these original Americans. Dr. Garza, from theMeakan/Garzas Band of the Coahuiltecans, states, “The majority of research about these Coahuiltecan groups is scarce and little is known about their culture and history. <><>This lecture series provides researched information about these original Texas Indians.” <><>This thought provoking re-examination of Mexican Americans from theirpre-Columbian and modern stance will be one of five more topics that themonthly lecture series will present at the cultural center, starting April27 and running through September 28.<><>In October, the six lectures will be repeated at a day-long conference held at the M.A.C.C. <><> The lecture series includes topics such as comparisons and examples of Native American healing practices, successful Native teaching methods, extinct-language revitalization efforts, and United Nations recognition of indigenous rights. <><> All members of the public are invited to explore the deep roots of American culture at these lectures and demonstrations.<><> All presentations are free and open to the public. If this one is as good as the the previous two, you really need to come. The topic alone should make you want to attend....
