i have lived in newaygo county since 1978 and have vacationed here since the early 60's . i still live in newaygo co. and my famil and i love to explore nature. we have been fortunate enough to view all aspcts of nature from wildlife that hae been declared extinct in our state, to natural and supernatural phenomena . all in this great county! my quation is this; in the area known as big prairie, in the surrounding pine forests ther are hundreds of earthen mounds varying in sizes . are these native american burial sites or just natural formations. there are so many. if they are indeed burial sites, what a sacred place. please help me to find out.

Eddie,The pine plantations contain many mound-like formations because during the 1930's, the "desert" had many sand dunes that were later planted over with the pine trees. Most of these mounds are unlikely to be burial mounds unless they occur near a river and are above the flood plain that exisited at the time the mounds were made (500 to 1,000 years ago). It is best to start with historical documentation of mounds, then search the area in question. Most mounds are made by old junk heaps or modern soil piles made during recorded history.
