I have never heard of the Catskills. I stumbled on it by accident today and was suddened to see hotels like Grossingers.Just a thought, were resorts such as these marketed to the UK, Europe etc? I'm from the UK and I'm not bad at geography, what I'm saying is that I doubt many other people will know it either. A lot of people want to visit an English speaking country on vaccation and over here people don't seem as concerned about flying as they once where. Sadly, an all inclusive resort like Grossingers would probably prove popular for UK travellers. |

I was a summer staff/guest at Waxman's Overlook Hotel on rt 52. It was directly across from The Capitol Hotel.I believe it was 1960 or 61. The Capitol was abandoned at the time. I remember going in with other kids from the day camp through an open widow. We had the lobby filled with matresses & had a great time jumping. At the end of that summer there was an explosion and the main building of the hotel was gone. I was young and I don't quite remember if this was an accident, demolition or arson. |

I love the title, would like to bring back more memories! My parents (Mary and Herman Mahl) took us to Lansman's bungalow colony, circa 1945-1950. I've been working on memoirs, one piece about this expereince and its effects on me as a young child I called "Enchanted Land"--anyone have a similar experience? judith_washington@yahoo.com for contact |

Does anyone know what happened to the Paramount Hotel property after the auction in 2005? I was a children's counselor at the hotel and was hoping to visit it again. I learned about the fire a few years ago and when I recently checked to see if it had been rebuilt I could not find anything after the auction. |

The Paramount was sold to a group of Koreans. There has been no work on it since the purchase. a steel shell for the main building was erected and that's it. I drove by recently and nothing has changed |

Does anyone out there have any info on "The Grandview Villa"? lt was run by my grandparents in the 50's and 60's. lt was in Cairo. My grandfather's name was John Papenhusen. You probably wouldn't forget that name if you heard it! Spent a lot of happy summer times there. lt was a boarding house, and there was another boarding house across the street. lt was also near a big stream and a highway passed nearby. lt also had a large log cabin with more rooms and a bar on the back of the property. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Hey Bob, my family went to the Rexcroft every year as well...usually first two weeks of August. Sadly the Rexcroft is no longer there. It has been turned into apartments. I was up that way last year for a wedding in a nearby town. I remember it so well and I remember Bill and Bea Zeeb. I am in contact with their niece Kim who used to waitress there...It does bring back fond memories though...wish my kids had that same option. |

I worked at the Dellwood during the summer of 1974 with Carol Salem from NY, Stefanie and some local sisters Ronnie & Vinnie. The Nick Mancini Trio played in the lounge when we didn't have visiting B list stars like Gino Caruso (I still have an autographed LP)and John Wayne Jr. (so he claimed). I would love to speak to anyone with any association or memories. |

Our family vacationed at Pappenhousen's boarding house in Cairo New York every year for about 10 years all through the 60's. I remember swimming in the ice cold pool as it was filled with actual spring well water. We always stayed in the log cabin rooms above the bar. I can remember "Jimmy" the bar tender serving up the ice cold beers and Mrs Pappenhousen making all those meals 3 times a day working her butt off in the kitchen and how she would "clang" the dinner bell. We never stayed in the boarding house because it was very old then and leaned to one side. We played shuffle board on the patio in front of the bar in the evenings and quite a few guests from Rexcroft would come over and join in the fun. If anyone out there has an address or even the name of the street the Rexcroft and Pappenhousens was on; please post it. I have Googled "main street cairo new york" to see if I can find it but my memory fails me. I remember there was an airport near by and every year my Dad would take us kids for a Piper Cub ride and my favorite was riding the horses at a horse rental place down the road. I have such fond memories of our yearly vacations at Pappenhousens. http://amazingforums.com/forum3/CATSKILLS/p2.html |

Papenhusen's was located across the street from Rexcroft Resort on Old Lake Mills Road in Cairo. I was told property was sub-divided. Log cabin was turned into apartments. |

HI, Brian and Bob. I also worked at the Overlook Hotel in the early to mid 60's. My father's family owned the Overlook so I was up there every summer from the mid 50's until it was sold. Although we lived in Brooklyn, I always felt like the summers in the Mountains were the only times I was really alive. For as far back as I can recall, the Capital Hotel, across the road from the Overlook, was always deserted. We made up stories about the ghosts that "lived" there. So many memories of walking along Route 52 to go into Loch Sheldrake and get an ice cream soda at Doc's. |
