Sandy, The Gamma Knife procedure is a high dose of radiation pointed directly into the tumor. If your niece has already had her recommend dose of radiation and is at her limit then she would not be eligible for the Gamma Knife. You see the Gamma Knife is just radiation, no surgery is involved. I wish I could have given you better news and something to help her. I am really trying to get the word out about the Gamma Knife, before the patients end of radiation. If you would like to speak with a specialist on it, Hannah's doctor's name is Dr. Henry E. Cotman and he is located at Bayfront Cancer Care Center in St. Peterburg, FL. |

We spoke with our oncologist, Dr. Foreman at Children's of Denver, about options available with the gamma knife. He said it was not an option as it destroys the tissue surrounding and containing the tumor - in our son Ben's case the entire brain stem. I did place a call into a gamma knife center in Boulder, CO, but was told that they are not seeing children with brain tumors. Hope that helps or at least leads to more questions on this one. http://steadman.blog.com Steadman Family |
