I am currently working on applying to PhD Programs and I was wondering what's the best way to gather information about each specific discipline and the faculty research interests at each school. I've been on faculty webpages but I've finding it difficult getting a good feel on what each school is about. Also, for current students - how did you narrow down and determined what your research interests were prior to applying and have they changed since then? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A good resource for identifying a research interest is the vol. 31 of the Journal of Accounting and Economics. They published a series of "reviews" of accounting literature. These will give you an idea of what was being done at the time. They are a little dated, but worth while if you want to better understand the areas of research. If you attended a PhD Project conference, contact any of the students you met and ask for ideas and references. We all went through a similar process. The best advise I received was from a meeting with faculty at UNC. We talked about my interest an directed me towards programs that matched. You may want to go back to your undergraduate institution or a local university and ask for advise. Alumni of the PhD Project would eb a good resource as well.
