Hello everyone. I was recently told about this site by a friend of mine. I am in the process of completing my MBA with an accounting concentration in hopes of obtaining a collegiate position upon completion; how rare is it to have non PHD professors at the collegiate level? My only professional work experience is as a government civilian and I've had to stray away from performing accounting realted duties due to lack of personnel. My backup plan is to quit my job and enroll full time in a PHD program(if I can boost my GMAT score) but I am unsure of what to expect (financially and generally speaking). I mean, does having a PHD guarantee me a teaching job? Also, I've spent the past 8 years working full time and going to school full time so I'm not sure if I am physically prepared to jump right into a PHD program next year. I'm only 24 but at times I feel 44!!

Y&R: You should be eligible to teach with just you MBA at most schools. However, you will be in an adjunct or lecturer level. Generally these are one year contracts and may not have great job security. A PhD is a pretty much a research degree. It will open up more opportunities for you to teach as well as do research in the area of accounting. It will also give you the opportunity to obtain tenure. I am a PhD student at the Univ. of AZ, and will be in a position to teach and do research when I finish the program. You may want to apply to attend the PhD Project Conference in Chicago next year. Unfortunately you just missed the 2007. Best of luck and send me an email if you have any specific questions about programs. Bob Huber
