Seeking Mentorship...
I am about to begin my studies in pursuit of a Ph.D with the University of Fairfax online program this Fall. Additionally, I am preparing to take several IA, IT and PM related certifications. I have 4 yrs until my 20 yr military retirement and I want to streamline my efforts to maximize on this opportunity. Thank you

Claude,
I am at the dissertation phase of my Ph.D. in IT management at Capella University (online). Since you are planning to pursue your degree through the same medium, I would be glad to share my experiences, frustrations, etc. with you. Thanks

I never knew there were online PH.D programs. I'm in the second class of an online MS Informations Systems Mgt thru Keller Graduate School of Mgt. However, pursuing a PH.D has always been in the back of my mind since I am a technology trainer and have taught part time at the local community college and for IBM Global Training. I am interested in hearing more about your experiences in both of these PH.D programs.

Claude, Tiffany & Dominic,
I am also in the online PhD program at Capella University in Information Systems. I have been looking for a mentor for this process but to no avail. I have had to create a network for myself. If anyone needs to speak to me for any PhD related info please feel free to speak to me. My contact info is below.

I am seriously considering a PhD in Information Systems. My undergraduate degree is in MIS. I have also taught online courses for Master's students. How do you think an online PhD will work for you? Why did you choose Capella?

Can anybody tell if they are having a problem with scoring hi on the gmat or gre?
Has anyone heard that a DMgt and online programs does not have the same respect and a traditional PHD program?

I recently graduated from Clark Atlanta University with an MS degree in CS with a concentration in Information Systems. My undergraduate degree was in CS. So, I am thinking that it would not be as efficient to get a PhD in Information Systems. I am thinking about management. Any thoughts???
Adriane posted 5/22/07 4:14 AM
Actually, Adrianna, it seems ideal to me that you would pursue your PhD in IS and should consider the program across the road at Georgia State University in CIS which has the breadth of researchers working in a range of more technical areas to more organizational areas. Why recreate a base that you already have? I write based on my experience as a systems engineering major as an undergrad, IT consultant, and then attending the GSU CIS program just mentioned -- in fact, I just graduated! Good luck in your decision-making process!

This message board is so helpful! I too am considering getting my doctorate in IS. However, I was told that I had to go fulltime, which is not an option since I am head of my household. I never considered getting my degree online. I live in Houston, how do I find out about the programs here and how long does it normally takes to secure a PhD in IS? I got my undergrad degree in CIS and Master's in Business.

I just registered for my first class. I am pursuing my Doctorate in Business Administration with a concentration in Information Systems. I have my B.S. in Computer Science and my M.A. in Training and Development. I have been in the IT industry for 20 years. I am so glad I was referred to this site.

I have completed one year of my doctoral studies overseas in England and it doesn't look like I'll be able to return to the UK to finish. I am finding it difficult to decide on how to pursue completion of my degree and really want to research the information systems field. With a BBA in finance and MBA in international business, can anyone provide some advice on if this pursuit will be really difficult not having a degree in MIS. Also do you think the PhD Project conference would be helpful for me? Thanks.

Does anyone have a list of PhD programs that offer online programs. I to cannot attend full time, would be interested in online or evening programs for IS.

How is the program at Capella? I have read many mixed reviews on its Phd program. I have over 20yrs IT experience and am considering on-line programs so that I can continue working while attending school. Would appreciate your comments.

The University Of Maryland Univeristy College (UMUC) has DMgT Degree program. Its program highlights follow:
"With an emphasis on the practical application of concepts, research, and knowledge to real world management issues, students are prepared in areas such as: leadership, management theory and practice, strategy formulation and execution, operational planning, technology acquisition, organizational and behavioral processes, assessment, and global operations".
UMUC is a great university. Its degrees are highly recognized and valued. I would be interested in the degree myself except that UMUC semesters are 16 weeks long and only three semesters are offered each year.
Congratulations to all of you on your prior achievements to this point. IT, IS, ITM, IA, DBA are great degree areas to become future experts.
While reading the posts to this forum I noticed that there isn't much comment to help the person who made a request or posting prior to someone postinga new one. To be a better forum it will be beneficial to each of us to at least say hello to prior posters and to comment however possible to left that person know that they are not alone in this great endeavor to attain a Doctorate Degree.
I will research info to comment on postings to this forum and hope I will gain valuable friendships and information as we grow and share experiences with each other.
I am an IT major (ASEET, BSIT, MAITM). I am interested in possibly the University of Phoenix, Walden University or Capella University. I am leaning more towards Capella as it is highly recognized in the Business world. My company has an agreement (Partnership) which reduces tuition. I read several postings that stated individuals were enrolled at Capella.
Dominic, you appear to be the closest person to graduating. Tell us about your experiences, course load, university procedures, your likes/dislikes, about Capella.

I am looking at Walden because I cannot commit to a full time program. However I was greatly discouraged to do an online program when I went to the PhD conference. What do you think and how are the job prospects after an online degree?
Doctor of IS posted 12/28/07 2:41 PM
Gwen (and all),
Having a PhD in Information Systems from a large state university and being employed at a similar, mainstream university, I have some insights (opinions, perhaps) about the perception of online doctorates which you can read elsewhere in the forum (look at the top level). I admit upfront that it sounds very negative, but I am only trying to be honest. In a subsequent message, I will share more of my story including surviving a PhD program with a spouse and kids while on much lower income.

I am currently in a PhD program at Capella University. On-line degrees have become more acceptable in today's society. However, the problem is that individuals in the Traditionalist and Baby Boomer Generation have not yet figured out that there is more than one way to learn and/or work. Additionally, everyone on the panel can attest to the fact that there are individuals in their organization that telecommute, which plays a big part of our workforce today, i.e. virtual teams. To this end, the same applies for learning as the professors that teach at on-line universities are the same ones that teach at Brick and Mortar universities. Capella is one of only a few whether it is Brick and Mortar or online that offers a PhD in Information Technology. I strongly urge you all to do your research if you looking for a PhD program. The biggest thing that baffles me about the individuals on this panel is that you are all in IT, which means you know that things can be done remotely.
Good Luck to those of you that are seeking a university!
Marie

One thing that I forgot to mention is that Capella University ensures that all of their courses can be transferred to other universities. The other thing that I feel that’s worth mentioning is that one of my current professors is a PhD graduate of Harvard University. To this end, that should tell you the caliber of instructors that are teaching at Capella University.

Doctor IS, not sure if you are still out there but would love to talk with you. I am considering the traditional versus the online degree and have not settled on one yet. I work full time as a consultant. I have two small children.
Robert posted 5/8/08 4:01 PM
I am writing this as a former department head and business school dean. Over the years I have seen (and heard my colleagues speak of) applications from doctoral candidates from online universities and the likes of the U. of Phoenix. We simply will not hire their products.
Bottom line: you are getting a second (or lower) tier degree and you will be very, very disappointed in the results of your search and career growth. Do not let them tell you differently!
Recommendation: stay with the traditional doctoral programs only at AACSB accredited schools.
Remember basic brand management.
