I have 1 year remaining in undergrad. Right now, I am undecided as to whether or not I should pursue a Masters or PhD once I complete my undergraduate studies. I don't believe that I would like to work as a college professor or lifetime researcher, but I hear that's pretty much the only reasons (career wise) to obtain a PhD. Is this a myth? Are there other careers out there for women of color who have a PhD in IS? Any resources for me to read would be helpful....Thanks in advance! |

The decision to pursue a master's or a PhD depends on what you what to do as a career. Since you are about to graduate with your undergraduate degree and do not want to be a college professor just yet, I would recommend pursuing a master's degree from one of the higher-ranking MIS schools (MIT, Carnegie-Melon, UT-Austin, or Arizona). A PhD has more credibility if you have 5-10 years work experience to compliment it. Have the two will make you a prime candidate for consulting. http://mis.eller.arizona.edu/cgi-bin/web/about/index.cgi University of Arizona Dept. of MIS |

I have 19 years experience in the Information Systems. I have my BS in Business Administration specializing in Managment Information Systems. I have a MA in Computer Resource Information Systems from Webster Univeristy. I have a great job as Director of Technology for a school District in St. Louis. Would it be possible to pursue a doctoral degree while continuing my current position? |
