Trivia:Did any one recognize Arthur C. Clarke? When Roy Scheider had his discussion in front of the White House, Arthur C. Clarke was feeding the pidgeons on the left hand side of the screen.

Great discussion before the movie. Even though I've seen it a few times on TV, there's still no substitute for seeing the film on the big screen with big sound. During an early sequence, Floyd and the current President's science advisor are talking on a bench in front of the Whitehouse. Off to the left is an elderly man feeding the birds. You can't see his face but he looks VERY much like Arthur C. Clarke. In the hospital sequence towards the end of the film a nurse is looking at Time magazine. There are two men on the cover: Kubrick and Clarke. Here's another observation. In both the book and the movie the Monolith is described as having the proportions of 1x4x9 (the squares of 1, 2 and 3). However, if you look carefully at the images in the film the proportions of the Monolith around Jupiter look much more like 1x8x27 (the cube of 1, 2 and 3). I guess the 'cube' proportions are more visually dramatic than the 'square'. There were at least a couple of scientific and/or logical inconsistencies in the film but I hesitate to offer unnecessary criticism.

I LOVED the movie, but only because of the enlightening discussion that preceded it. I think the film does NOT stand alone. Someone seeing "2010" without having watched its predecessor would have been totally stymied by the many faces and appearances of Dave.ANOTHER GREAT FLIFF EVENING! Thanks, Hal!
