Situated in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean at the entrance of Little Egg Harbor Bay NJ. Tuckers Island was New Jersey (1700's)first shore resort, that was swallowed by the Atlantic ocean (1920's), like the lost city of Atlantis.Tuckers Island was first called Short Beach and would attract summer vistors during the early to mid-1700's. Rubeun Tucker purchased the land in 1765 and built a large boarding house that propsered, until it burned down in 1845.By the dawn of the civil war, Tuckers boarding house was again rebuilt and beaches. Sand had built up between Long Beach Island & Tuckers Island. The old inlet was blocked and people could walk from island to island. In the 1880s plans were made to build a railroad from LBI to Tuckers Island. Men came to build a lighthouse and life saving station and a row of bungalows which wear ruined by storms. The railroad plans where abandoned. In 1919 the atlantic had a mighty storm that would claim the entire Island. By 1927 the lighthouse eroded. I can provide the only know example of picture postcard photos of the storm damage of 1919 which shows the buildings of tuckers being washed into the sea.
